EarthFair '99 ... it's a gift

Unwrap your gift on April 18 in Balboa Park

by Chris Klein

arthFair is a gift to the citizens of San Diego. Let me tell you what's in your gift package.

You'll find more than 200 exhibitors from nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses, and state, local and federal government agencies. Each exhibitor has some message, product or service that supports the EarthWorks mission of creating a healthy, prosperous, sustainable environment for all living things. You'll have conversations and find things to take home that will support your commitment to the environment.

The package also contains five stage venues, where you can hear music from reggae to oldies to folk. You'll find a special Children's area, with hand-on activities for kids, and a Children's Earth Parade at 10:30 (when was the last time you received a gift with a parade in it?).

You'll find the Earth-Friendly Foods area a welcome relief from the burger-and-soda fare sold in the rest of the park (this is the only part of the gift that isn't free). Of course, the profits from all of our exhibitor's sales at EarthFair go to benefit some nonprofit organization.

Picking up your gift (traveling to EarthFair)

There will be many more San Diegans coming to pick up their gift than there is parking space for in the immediate vicinity of the park. After about 11am, parking close to the park will be difficult. So, we have the following suggestions to help make the trip as stress-free as possible.

1) Ride a bicycle free, guarded bicycle parking will be provided in front of the Museum of Man (just east of the Laurel St. bridge) and in the Children's Area (turn in at Village Place off Park Blvd., just south of the Zoo). If you don't want to ride all the way, park a comfortable distance from the park and ride the rest of the way.

2) Ride public transportation. There is a trolley stop about a 5 minute walk from the park.

3) Use our off-site parking lot and free natural gas-powered shuttle buses. From I5, take Pershing Drive north about 3/4 mile and follow the signs to our parking lot in Florida Canyon. The shuttle will run from 10am to 6pm.

The gift card reads

EarthFair is not simply a gift from San Diego EarthWorks. It's a gift from our volunteers. EarthFair is planned and produced entirely by volunteers, some of whom work for weeks in advance to get your gift just right.

It's a gift from our performers, all of whom donate their time. It's a gift from the City of San Diego, which donates many necessary services, and from dozens of other organizations whose names are listed in the Program Guide. Really, a gift from San Diego to San Diego.

If you would like to help prepare the gift, by volunteering, call our 24-hour message line at (619) 496-6666 or sign-up online at www.earthdayweb.org.
