ith the saucy slogan "We've Got Huevos",
The Broken Yolk Cafe, in Pacific Beach and Encinitas never disappoints.
They havemore than 25 different, creative omelets to choose from. If you
don't like their choices, you can make your own.
I've learned to combine them. My favorite is
based on the "No Name" omelet. As listed on the menu, it includes
bacon, mushrooms, and avocado, topped with sour cream. So I just eliminate
the bacon, add onions and ortega chilies and top with salsa. They have no
problems with substitutions here!
Side selections to choose from include toast,
freshly baked biscuits and blueberry muffins, rice, fresh fruit, home fries
or frijoles.
There are many ways of making omelets largely
a matter of personal taste but the Yolk's wins my vote. They wrap a perfectly
done omelet "pancake" around a very generous helping of
filling. It literally bulges. You never find yourself wondering, say, if
they forgot the avocado it's loaded with thick slices.
Besides omelets, the menu offers the standard
breakfast fare with a few special surprises. A favorite of mine is the classic
huevos rancheros: eggs over a tortilla topped with fresh salsa and side
of frijoles. Pancakes lovers can have plain, blueberry, multi-grain, chocolate
chip or banana. They also serve my husband's Sunday morning favorite, a
strawberry waffle with fresh strawberries in season - be sure to ask.
This menu also includes lunch items such as
sandwiches, salads, and a daily soup and quiche specials. I've tried most
items and all are above average.
If you have larger number of eggs in mind,
the Cafe offers it's "Broken Yolk Special - for the iron man or woman"
consisting of a dozen eggs, topped with chili, plus sides. Eat the whole
thing in one sitting you pay only $1.98 and get your name on a plaque on
the wall!
Packed on weekends, I like to go down to the
cafe in Pacific Beach during the week and discuss business over a cup of
coffee that I didn't have to make.
They also offer specials for lunch and early-bird
breakfasts (before 8am). Open daily from 6am to 3pm, 1851 Garnet Ave., Pacific
Beach or 1486 Encinitas Blvd., Encinitas.
