EarthFair '95 ... it's that time again!
by Kari Gray
n Earth Day millions of people look for something meaningful
to do for the environment. The 25th Anniversary of Earth Day this year will
generate an even greater participation with an expected half-billion people
taking part worldwide. In San Diego, more than 70,000 people are expected
to attend San Diego Earth Day's sixth annual EarthFair in Balboa Park on
Sunday, April 23, 1995 from 10:00am - 5:00pm. EarthFair is the largest free
environmental event in the West.
Now, you can be an important part of EarthFair '95 -
and have fun doing it. The EarthFair is produced entirely by volunteers.
More than 400 volunteers take part by managing the Earth Parade, assisting
exhibitors and visitors, parking bicycles, helping manage the five stages
of entertainment, recycling, manning the San Diego Earth Day booths ...
all the jobs that go to make up the event. Without this grass-roots support,
the EarthFair literally could not take place!
If you would like to be a part of the fun, meet some
terrific people and take action for the future, come to our
January Volunteer Meeting
When: Tuesday, January 24, 6:30pm
Where: Joyce Beers Center
1230 Cleveland Street in North Park.
We'll show you the cool EarthFair slide show and tell
you about all the ways you can help. Whether you can give 3 - 4 hours on
the day of the event, or would like to take on major responsibility as a
team leader, we have just the job for you!
But wait ... there's more
SDED is up to more than just the EarthFair. Volunteers
are also needed for our other planned events. Other projects for 1995 include:
- Graffiti Cleanups
- Business Environmental Achievement awards
- Very Important Planet (VIP) Reception and silent auction
- Food Choices compaigne
- Concerts
- TEAM Earth Passport to a Better World
If any of these piques your interest, plan to attend
our volunteer event.
We also have special needs for a volunteer coordinator
and youth team volunteers. If you can work about 10 hours per week, like
to talk with people on the phone, and would like to be an important part
of the '95 Earth Day scene, please call Kari at 272-7370.
Calling all exhibitor's, too
Last year, 270 organizations had exhibits and activities
at EarthFair, including nonprofits, for-profit companies with environmental
products or services, and government agencies. If your club, group, company,
organization, agency - whatever - has an environmental cause, product or
service, you'll want to be at EarthFair '95. Call 496-6666 and request an
exhibitor packet.
San Diego Earth Day is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization
