Three things you can do TODAY to help fight global warming. provided by Next Generation

Every time you switch on a light in your house, you contribute to global warming. Over half of this country's electricity supply is generated by dirty coal plants, a major cause of global warming and poor air quality. And, over half of California's electricity supply relies on hazardous waste producing nuclear power and fossil fuels. You can help change the equation by choosing electricity generated using clean, renewable power: wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal (harnessing natural steam from the earth). You can reduce the amount of dirty power that goes into the power grid and your home by choosing a green power provider that relies on 100% renewable energy. Clean car technology is here! California's Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) program requires auto makers to begin to manufacture and market cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles. But we still have a long way to go. Nearly half of California's global warming pollution comes from automobile pollution. And car companies are still dragging their feet on production, claiming that consumers don't want to buy clean cars. Prove the car companies wrong by pledging to consider clean vehicles when you next purchase a car. Check out the Union of Concerned Scientists web site at www.cleancarpledge.org to learn more about Zero Emissions Vehicles. |

Let the Governor hear from you. Two critical programs are at stake this year: continued funding for renewable power generation and the ZEV mandate. ZEV requires auto makers to produce and market clean, "zero emission" cars. Continued renewable power funding promotes the rapid growth of a clean, renewable power market to help reduce air pollution. Your help is needed to demonstrate strong public support for improved California air quality. Let your voice be heard - write to the Governor today! Find your state representative and the Governor's address at the state web site at www.state.ca.us to voice your support for clean cars and renewable power now. |

Honorable Governor Gray Davis State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 Dear Governor Davis, I am writing to urge you to champion two of the state's most important clean air programs this year: the Zero-Emissions Vehicle Mandate and continued funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency. These programs have improved the quality of life for Californians over the past five years by protecting public health and the environment. At the same time, they have made our economy more efficient and competitive by stimulating the development of clean technologies. A rapid transition to renewable energy is also essential if we are to stem the tide of global warming, which President Clinton has called the biggest environmental challenge of the next century. Please maintain and expand the ZEV Mandate and renewable energy funding this year. Sincerely, (your name) |
