Telephone book recycling wave hits the South Bay and East County

provide by I Love A Clean San Diego

he Ninth Annual Pacific Bell Directory Telephone Book Recycling Program makes its way to the South Bay and East County from October 8 through November 20, 2001. In collaboration with the City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department and I Love A Clean San Diego, Pacific Bell Directory holds the San Diego Telephone Book Recycling Program annually to encourage recycling of old phone books, as the new ones are distributed. The paper that is recovered by recycling phone books is used to make new directories, mailing envelopes, and other paper products.

The Program is held in different areas of San Diego County at different times of the year, coinciding with Pacific Bell Directory's telephone book distribution schedule. More than 287,000 new telephone books will be distributed in East County, and more than 230,000 will be distributed in the South Bay. In addition, more than 200,000 Spanish Yellow Pages - with a cover displaying San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy handing a telephone book to Shamu - will be delivered.

“By holding this program during the distribution of the new telephone books, Pacific Bell Directory is making an effort to see that old phone books are not only replaced, but recycled,” said Anita Starnes, Southern California Recycling Manager of Pacific Bell Directory. “Our telephone books are made with water based glues so that the whole phone book is recyclable,” said Starnes.

To discourage people from putting their old telephone books in the trash, telephone book drop-off locations have been designated throughout East County and the South Bay area. The designated drop-off sites provide people a convenient location to recycle their old phone books. Drop-off bins can be found at participating grocery stores, recycling centers, and city halls. Some residents may also have the option of recycling their old phone books by putting them in their curbside recycling bin. To find out more about curbside phone book recycling, or to locate the closest drop off site, residents can call I Love A Clean San Diego's Recycling Hotline (1-800-237-2583).
