he Liberty Recycling Division of Coast Waste Management
is delighted to announce the availability of its hot-off-the-press 1997
Environmental Awareness Calendar. One free copy per person may be obtained
at the Liberty Recycling Buyback Centers at: 5960 El Camino Real, Carlsbad;
2265 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar; and 805 East Mission Road, San Marcos.
The Calendar is the result of the company's
1996 "Adventures of the Four Liberty Rs" contest, which challenged
children 14 and younger to become the Remarkable Hero of their own story/poster,
showing how to prevent the world from turning into one, big, nasty trash
can. In the company-provided first portion of the story, the three Rs (Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle) worked hard to encourage good source reduction habits. Each
entrant became the fourth R - the Remarkable Hero - telling what he or she
would do to help the three Rs in their environmental quest.
According to President/General Manager Conrad
Pawelski, "In keeping with the fantastically creative solutions to
the problem of too much trash and not enough places to put it, the Calendar
is produced in a comic-book motif." A portion of each of the 142 entries
is highlighted on the Calendar, along with tips and useful information.
Among the children responding to the contest
were entire classrooms from schools in Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach,
Oceanside and Vista. The winners of the top 14 entries received prizes and
all entrants were honored at an awards ceremony in which they were invited
to display their posters and read their stories to an avid audience of parents
and friends.
